AFTER $380 million in refunds to Colorado taxpayers, there will STILL be almost $1 billion in budget surplus that our state can spend. Where should this money be spent? We have some suggestions for legislators that reflect the desires and needs of Coloradans, and we want to know what you your pick.

Roads Coloradans shot down two potential infrastructure-funding measures on last year’s ballot. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to be addressed, it simply means taxpayers didn’t like the proposals to raise taxes or bond as a solution. The surplus could go a long way towards fixing this important issue.

Rural Mental Health Services Health care services in rural areas of Colorado are seriously lacking – especially in the area of mental health. Coloradans have said that cost and access to health care are at the top of their list of concerns.

Classrooms When addressing education funding, we can agree that the need is in the classroom. Whether it’s school supplies, technology upgrades, or higher teacher pay, the budget surplus could go a long way to addressing the needs of our students.

Helping Struggling Communities Despite our strong economy, there are areas in our state that are struggling to have equal opportunities and a chance at prosperity. We can use some of the surplus to mirror ideas like Opportunity Zones that aim to directly address the economic needs of struggling communities.

Fill The State Reserves We’re riding a strong economy right now, but there may come a time in the future that Colorado hits a budget recession, and when that time comes it won’t hurt to have more money in the “rainy day fund.”
